Expired domains go through several stages. For roughly the first month you can renew at the normal price (grace period). After that the domain enters redemption for about 30 days, where restoring it requires an extra registry fee. Once redemption ends, the domain is released for public registration and anyone can take it. Exact windows vary by TLD, so renew early rather than testing the timeline.
